The villages are located between the tenth and sixteenth centuries as centers of agricultural life functional organization of production of the countryside; inhabited by peasants, are a tool of colonization and the highlighting of the campaign, as well as, when walled garrison to defend the territory.

The isolated rural house, extensively developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, assumes a variety of types, because of the environmental, agricultural resources available, social condition and ways of life of those who lived there. However, the most traditional type is made from the house superimposed over the country, with an internal staircase or leaning against the outside of the building, rarely with the porch and the porch; are also widespread, especially in the hills, the homes with several outbuildings secondary side leaning against the house or separate from it and spread around the barnyard. In this varied morphology is associated with a certain homogeneity due to the massive masonry blocks of irregular stones or, more rarely, brick, tile roofs almost always, and a few narrow openings.

The manor house, as well as prestigious residence and place of recreation aristocratic and ecclesiastical aristocracy, represented the center of agricultural management of large landholdings. Often fate of existing defensive structures or religious, frequently consist of multiple architectures (building, stables, chapel, ...) are the result of an extraordinary combination of nature and culture, product integration between the visual and functional morphology of the terrain, the architectural work, the garden or the park, the boulevard and the agrarian context in which they are inserted admirably.

Parishes, churches and abbeys blocks are an important part of the network of settlements formed in the Middle Ages.
